Salmon Falls Cape, Hollis, ME C.1790

This house in Hollis, ME is certainly one of the more interesting buildings we have worked on. It featured walls in which were infilled with 3” plank in which served for insulation. However this makes sense historically since the salmon falls area on the Saco River was the true original hotbed for logging in the state. Lets just say there was wood around. We were tasked with replacing the original front sill which did very well but eventually could’t take the plants that grew over it and deteriorating carpentry. There was also considerable damage to the lower half of the front entry. We carefully lifted it using are typical jacking methods and installed a new in-kind replacement timber, using traditional timber framing methods. We then did our typical surgery on the entry which featured a new theshold and matching federal period mouldings. Finishing it off was our typical quartersawn pine clapboard spaced at a tidy 2 1/2” reveal.
